There is a debate raging these days on social media on the net neutrality issue. Since a lot of details are well-known, just a instances of what happens when net neutrality gets violated:
1. The Airtel-Flipkart fracas – In brief, Airtel promoted its Airtel Zero Platform scheme, under which certain apps would not have cost users any data charge (which means apps not on the platform are automatically being disfavoured). Flipkart supported it, and as a response their ratings on Android and iOS app stores were flamed to holy hell.
2. Andhra Pradesh-based Bluwifi charged its users extra money for accessing P2P services – that is, our lifeline, the much-beloved torrents.
3. Airtel wanted to charge additional money around Christmas 2014 for OTT services such as Viber and WhatsApp.

There are many other examples, but I hope you got the flavour of the problem: telecom service providers and internet service providers want to make (more) money off their internet services. Let me quote Rajat Mukarji of Idea Cellular:
“Riding for free on our network puts a certain amount of strain on our network. They’re reaching out to my customer with a capability which I couldn’t provide. But, don’t take my cake away from me. I have to survive as well.”

So let’s spell out the telco argument: “Customers pay once for our internet package. Then we want to charge them again depending on the kind of content they access. That’s because we have not yet “monetized” that, and because the service we themselves offer are being ignored because of the services that content makers (such as social networks, Google, Wiki, YouTube and so on) provide.”

Do I hear you saying “RUBBISH! BOLLOCKS! BALDERDASH!”?

Truth be told, net neutrality is not a principle of law right now. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India and the Department of Telecom have been indicating for years now that they have indeed been thinking about this issue. Unfortunately, they seem to be taking the side of the service providers and not the janta of the country. Let’s think of it this way: telecom operators have two very powerful lobbies, namely COAI (for GSM operators) and AUSPI (for CDMA). Additionally, internet providers have IAMAI. They have been lobbying with the TRAI for bending the rules in their favour.

“Hold on!” you say, “What about us, the consumers?”

Precisely: what about us? Who will ensure that we are not dealt a raw deal? And aren’t the regulators supposed to take OUR side, the benefit of consumers and not the benefit of service providers, if it can be said that consumer interests and corporate interests are mutually exclusive?

It’s time for a small detour to around February 2015: we wrote a post about a very dull regulatory announcement from a distant corner of the world. The American Federal Communications Commission had announced that internet service providers were henceforth to be classified as common carriers, and they had to ensure on pain of legal prosecution that there would be no:
1. No blocking: internet service providers cannot decide what I can access or not.
2. No throttling: my internet speed cannot be choked based on my consumption pattern
3. No paid prioritization: some websites cannot pay more money to get delivered faster to your device, or alternately, to choke down competitor websites.

For a moment, let us do a little poorv paksh on the telco side of the argument (which is rubbish): “we make heavy investments in spectrum auctions, in towers and in equipment – why should we not be allowed to recover that through pricing mechanisms that are free of regulatory oversight?” To that, I will respond in a number of ways:
First, consumers ARE already paying service providers their due charges, and it is the TELCOS who are cheating us consumers by not providing the requisite quality of service (internet speed slower than advertised, call drops, weak and patchy networks right in the middle of the busiest parts of metros, plus the immensely irritating spam messages and calls that no TSP has been willing to cease).
Second, spectrum pricing cannot and must not be connected to net neutrality: those prices cannot depend on what they force consumers to pay later down the line – which is a bad financial projection practice anyway.
Third, price ceilings are ALREADY very much in place: just last week, TRAI announced maximum roaming charges and SMS charges that can be levied, and they are now lower than what they used to be by a significant margin.

So, in short, we hope our government uses the same logic as the FCC and strictly enforces a stringent form of net neutrality. This is in the larger interest of a developing nation where improved internet access will have a ripple effect on the larger knowledge and service economy.

ISIS militants have released a video that shows a very cute, sweet looking boy who doesn't even seem to be in his teenage years. This‪#‎NanhaMujahid‬ (child terrorist) proceeds to blow a man's head off with a revolver, and then exults, shouting religious and terrorist slogans. This follows news that they are actively recruiting teenaged women for sexual grooming and to be jihadi brides, and just a few months ago there was a news.item that stated an eight or nine-year old girl was used to blow up a shopping market.

I am not sure what to make of such news - should I -

1. Feel sad for the loss of the innocent childhood these children could have had?

2. Feel outraged that their ideology teachers think it is okay to debase childhood in this way?

3. Feel helpless that their propaganda is so chillingly effective?

There are many movies such as Hanna and Kick-Ass that show us "the human side" of these monsters, and that aim to specify that these children are not BORN monsters, but are MADE monsters by selfish adults. The same logic that could be applied to the minor-rapist monster in the Nirbhaya case.

I would still hesitate if I were asked to judge the punishment these children would receive at the hands of a democratic system.

Nirbhaya Singh's murderer and convicted rapist * Juvenile * will be released.

Three years was all the punishment the law could mete out to him. And now, two years and three hundred and sixty four days into his prison term, the convict guilty of rape and murder of a young woman was to walk free, in a little less than a day.

He woke up fresh from the previous night's sleep. The prison officer had spoken to him the previous night regarding the details of his release. He had been made to sign a few papers the previous evening.

Things were looking up for the young convict. Three years in juvenile prison had taught him the craft of embroidery. He wondered if all countries had similar prisons, where convicts were given training and a chance to rehabilitate. He thanked God for his good fortune.

The guard knocked on his door. It was time to leave the room and appear for breakfast.

His usual breakfast table awaited him. A young ruffian who had been his prison mate for the last two months greeted him with a smile. A thin porridge and two slices of bread had been served to each of the inmates, most of them teenagers aged sixteen and below. He sat down and started to eat excitedly. The anticipation of his impending release playing in his mind.

"Brother, you seem to be in a big hurry today," the ruffian remarked.

"Oh yes I am. It's the day of my release today. I will be able to get out of this prison and live a free life," he answered happily.
"I know it already brother. You have every reason to be happy, but tell me something brother, were you really guilty of the crime? Or did the courts get it wrong?" the ruffian asked him casually, his attention focused on the tasteless porridge.

The convict's face fell. This question had been least expected. He wondered if he should reply with the truth that he always knew, or with the lie that he had wanted everyone to believe.

"Oh come on brother, don't tell me you were framed. You admitted everything in court didn't you? Or did the Police torture you to admit the guilt," asked the ruffian, still busy eating his slimy breakfast.

"Well, you have asked me what I really want to forget, but I guess we have become decent friends here. So let me tell you this, that the courts were right in my case," replied the convict as he broke a piece of dry bread.

"Ohh, really? Tell me more about it," the ruffian's eyes widened and his curiosity rose.

The convict felt a certain sense of importance that he had never felt before. The ruffian seemed to be a real fan. He smiled.

"Well you must have read all about it in the papers of course, and seen the news on TV. There is nothing more to add," the convict said.

The ruffian studied the convict's face. He appeared to be holding back the details.

"Come on, buddy. At least tell me how the girl looked. Was she pretty?" the ruffian asked him.

"Oh yes she was. She was a pretty girl, and she instantly caught our eye as we drove through the streets of Delhi that evening, me and my buddies. So when we saw her and her friend waving for auto-rickshaws to stop, we decided to give them a lift," the convict replied.

"Ohh brother, tell me more," the ruffian said.

"Well, we beat the guy up and threw him out of the bus. Then we took turns with the girl. It felt good of course, it felt really good.
She smelled of fresh roses, and it's weird but, her cries only turned me on even more. You know, I had seen this blue film a few nights ago, so I thought the rod inside her body won't exactly be a bad idea. Now that I think of it, had I not used the rod she would have survived, and I would have been held guilty of just a rape and about one year in prison," the convict lamented.

"Too bad brother. But three years is not too much I think, is it?" the ruffian replied as he bit into his piece of bread.

The convict looked sad. He looked up at the ceiling and said, "I lost three precious years of my youth brother. That's too much of punishment".

The ruffian had finished his porridge. He looked the convict in the eye.

"But surely brother, you would agree that the others getting fourteen years and you getting only three years is not exactly fair. And this difference only because you happened to rape and kill a woman at seventeen years of age. Don't you think your crime commanded a bigger punishment?" the ruffian asked.

"Well, you may be right but then, the law is what we all follow here. I got the punishment that the law deemed fit. I think it's now pointless to worry about my crime, even if the punishment was insufficient" the convict replied with a tone of indignation.

"Oh brother, I didn't mean to offend you here," the ruffian sounded apologetic.

"That's fine brother. You tell me, how long are you going to stay in this prison?" the convict asked him.

"About a year I think," the ruffian replied.

"A year? I thought you were here for pickpocketing!"

"I am, but that's not why they will keep me here for a year brother," the ruffian replied as he adjusted his pyjama.

"What do you mean?" the convict asked him, confused.

"I will be kept here for murder. But only for a year, since I am fifteen, and I agree, your punishment was grossly insufficient," the ruffian replied as he withdrew a knife from his pyjamas and slit the convict's throat.

It is not only about men to behave every time , sometime women need to behave too.

Yes, women’s safety is one of the biggest issues this country is dealing with and believe us, there is nobody who wouldn’t support it, men included. Women need to be empowered, no denying that. But certain things are plain wrong and unfair, even if it is a woman doing them. It may be difficult being a woman especially while taking the public transport, but the harsh truth is, there are things women do too that make it a nightmare for everybody else. Here are few things we men want women who take public transport to know.

1. Despising all men just because women are unsafe in the country is just hateful. Not all of us are rapists. It is not nice to get those hostile glances every morning, being talked to in an unnecessarily rude manner every time. Don’t judge the whole lot on the basis of a few perverts. Don’t misbehave. We can do it too, and you would definitely not like it.

2. Please be civil. Do not break lines or queues as per your convenience. It is wrong for a man to do that, and it is equally wrong for a woman to do the same. Just because you’re a woman doesn’t mean you get the privilege of breaking in and getting the ticket before the guy who has been waiting for his turn for the past ten minutes.

3. Don’t make issues out of nothing. If a man accidentally touches you, it doesn’t always mean he is trying to molest you. Public transports are crowded. There will be people standing on every inch of every space and whether you like it or not, there will be some sort of physical contact and there’s nothing we can do about it. We know it can be uncomfortable, but it is so even for us, not just you. Know that not most men don’t board trains and buses and metros to molest.

4. Please do not expect us to vacate our seats for you, unless it is reserved for women. There are a lot of women who demand even general seats. Just because a few guys do it out of respect or chivalry doesn’t mean those who don’t are being disrespectful to you. You could stand and travel too. Don’t make it look like a woman not getting to sit is a shame on society.

5. It is strange how the same woman who wants a personal space bubble of at least a metre even in a jam-packed bus or a metro and would never tolerate a man even accidentally touching her wouldn’t mind requesting (read ordering) people to ‘adjust’ her and fitting herself into that little space, making a dozen other people uncomfortable in the process. Just because we’re men doesn’t mean we don’t mind our personal space being intruded.

6. Stop playing the victim card and taking advantage of the fact that women safety is the prime concern of the nation. Even if you so much as argue with a woman about something that has nothing to do with ‘women exploitation’, more often than not, she would make it look like you’re harassing her. It is ridiculous how being a woman is all it takes to win any argument. Crowd is gathered, security is called and you’re threatened to be put behind bars. Why? Because you told her not to step on your feet.

We’re all for feminism and women empowerment, but let’s not uplift women by putting men down. What’s wrong is wrong

4. Avoid handshakes and up-close conversations with people.

8. Avoid too much of physical exertion.
